What Killed The Video Star?

I was IMing with David this morning (as I do) and he told me about a song that he is surprised he likes (Harlem by New Politics), which led me to YouTube to check it out (I don’t like it). And then I fell into a rabbit hole of terrible music videos. It was just one after another as I searched for something that didn’t suck. I saw sex where it didn’t make sense, odd characters and costumes, weird runny gloop… I decided to put together a list so that y’all wouldn’t have to endure what I did.

Although I suppose you might get curious now. Sorry ’bout that. At least I warned you, right?

WTF? Videos

Miley Cyrus – Wrecking Ball (why is she making out with the sledgehammer?)Lady Gaga – Applause (creepy!)
MS MR – Hurricane (omg gloooooop!)
MGMT – Electric Feel (just BAD!)
Churchill – Change (holy headache!)
AWOLNATION – Sail (girl needs to lay off the cigarettes, clearly)
Imagine Dragons – Radioactive (is this a JOKE?)
Arcade Fire – Reflektor (um, nightmares)

I did find some passable videos. They weren’t bizarre or completely sexed up or lacking in any connection to the meaning of the actual song. They were just kinda boring, which was actually an improvement on the gloop.

Lana Del Rey – Summertime Sadness
Foster The People – Pumped Up Kicks
Pearl Jam – Sirens
Girl on Fire – Alicia Keys
Royals – Lorde
Rihanna – Stay

Finally, I did find a few great music videos that captured the feeling of the song perfectly and didn’t have any WTF moments! These are actually worth linking.

I Approve! Videos

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis – Thrift Shop
Anna Kendrick – Cups
Tegan & Sara – Closer

And then I gave up because THREE, you guys. I found THREE.

I remember back in the day when music videos were the big thing. And now? They pretty much suck. Boo, I say, BOO. Bring back the video star!

Have you seen any good music videos lately?

  1. Right there there with you. I too miss awesome music videos. Pretty much every Lana del Rey music video makes me wanna take a nap, but I do like her music and Born to Die is actually a pretty good one. I have to admit, I might just like it because I wouldn’t mind wearing a crown of roses whilst sitting atop a thrown flanked by lions. Just thinking about it made me feel all fancy and kinda bada$$.

  2. Love this, I could spend hours talking about the music videos I don’t like! I get plenty inflicted on me by my daughter. I ‘Love the way you Lie’ with Rihanna and Eminem always makes me grind my teeth. Especially Eminem’s self pitying lyrics!

  3. Okay, don’t kill me but I love the What Does The Fox Say video.

On a more serious note, I am crazy in love with Brave by Sara Bareilles. Amazing video for an amazing song.

    1. I hadn’t even seen that video until you mentioned it – just had to look it up. WTF IS THAT!!!

And I may be in the minority but I cannot stand that Sarah Bareilles song! I feel like she is yelling at me.

  4. I haven’t seen a good music video in YEARS. I wonder if the de-musification of MTV has something to do with it? Without a place for videos to compete and be showcased, bands are relying on weirdness and sex to cause their videos to get views on YouTube, instead of actual artistry.

  5. I admit I’m in love with “Cups” — the song, whether pared-down or full-on. One of my larger ambitions is to perform it on The Voice someday. 🙂

Good videos? It’s not high art, but this performance of Cheap Flights by Fascinating Aida makes me grin. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPyl2tOaKxM&list=PLCB9A7D47F9179D02

This is fairly epic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzU9OrZlKb8&list=PLCB9A7D47F9179D02 – Britney Spears, Till The World Ends.

And of course Jill Scott: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1OC_XmeIck&list=PLCB9A7D47F9179D02
And also this by Miranda Lambert: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rB7ONnfIjaI&list=PLCB9A7D47F9179D02
